Who are you? And what do you do?

I’m currently 21 years old, recently deferred Uni (Bachelor of Commerce, Marketing), and am a bartender for work. Nothing beats travelling, beer, and music. For just over 2 years now, I’ve been running my own youth culture/lifestyle and fashion magazine; Sucker Magazine.

How did you get into Media and Events?

I got into the events side of things with the magazine because I felt like it’d be a fun way to engage with my audience and Sucker’s fan base. I started throwing parties at Rad Bar in Wollongong, and in recent times have gone onto hosting them at venues in Sydney, Cronulla, and Of course the hometown, Wollongong.

What do you like about your job?

I love that Sucker can not only bring people together, but showcase and encourage the exposure of creative talent and skill locally. I get to talk to and meet so many young geniuses when scouting content for issues. It’s a lot of fun. I didn’t realise how much of a passion I had for fashion, music, and art until I began this journey.

What are challenger’s you face in your career?

Plenty of challenges arise, don’t be misled! Firstly, a printed magazine is extremely difficult to process and throw out on the market. Everything is easily accessible online now. People don’t understand the time and expenses it takes to give someone something they can touch and look at, but personally, it makes the experience so much more worthwhile.

Advice for someone wanting to enter into media

My own venture has allowed me to meet so many great people and contacts, and this helps grow Sucker. I know for a fact that it won’t be simple and sometimes the easy option is to bail, but if you remember why you began the process in the first place, you’ll be sweet!

Personal Reflection:

I recently took part in a one day a week unpaid internship at OPUS design in Paddington on the Media team. During the four weeks as an intern I learnt a lot about how being on a media team works. After the four weeks I got offered a full time position on the team.

Opus design is a gift and homewares store that has a store in paddington and a store in Newtown (Octopus), they also have an online store.

On the Media Team there is two Graphic Designers and a Social Media Coordinator, My day to day activities consist of scheduling Facebook post for the week (usually product posts and free shipping message or when there is a sale) checking and responding to messages and comments on all social media platforms, when new products come in to the store I upload them to there online store, responding to any customer enquiries about products they may have ordered or wanting to know more about from the online store. My day has a basic routine though throughout the week with new stock arriving and other tasks coming in such as a Christmas catalogue my day is never usually the same.

From working at OPUS I am beginning to understand how business promote their products through social media and other media platforms and the effect it has. I have also been creating and styling content, posting on their socials etc. So far I have learnt how important it is to pay attention to detail as it is very important when posting and sending content out live that it has to be perfect as once it is out there everyone can see it.
